Week 29 Hello Fourth Quarter

Dear Second Grade Families,

Welcome spring!!  Here we are back from Spring Break, hopefully everyone had an enjoyable week!

A big thank-you for all the parents, family members, friends that were able to take a walk through the twentieth century.  The second grade students learned many interesting facts about their decade, as did the second grade teachers (Who knew bubblegum was invented in the 1920’s?).  It was a lengthy project to complete but Miss Garcia and myself are very pleased with the final products.

This week we begin the 4th quarter.  If the first three quarters have seemed to pass in a snap; Miss Garcia and myself can't image how quickly the last quarter will pass!  

Math

Our week in math continued to be all about word problems.  We worked on word problems related to money and measurement.  Students have been working extremely hard on reading, understanding, and solving word problems.  We ended our week with an assessment.

As we enter the 4th quarter, students will be exploring fractions.  We will be looking at wholes versus fractions, as well as halves, thirds, fourths, sixths, and eighths.  Some of the key vocabulary students will be using will include numerator, denominator, whole, half, thirds, fourths, sixths, and eighths.

Language

In language students will finish up their work on combining sentences to make compound sentences.  Students will be using the conjunctions and, so, but, and, or to combine sentences.

Writing

Second grade writers will spend some time this week working on a “small moment” narrative about something they did over Spring Break.  The narrative will be just a very short moment of an event.  Students will focus on the actions, thoughts, and feelings experienced during their “small moment”.

Projects

A new quarter with a new project.  To start the 4th quarter, students will become botanists.  Over the course of this project students will observe bean seeds, learn the main parts of a plant and their purpose, and create a model of a plant with labels.

Week 28 End of 3rd Quarter

Dear Second Grade Families,

Last week I tried to cut the 3rd quarter short.  We are now in the last week of the 3rd quarter and will start the 4th quarter on March 27th  (when we get back from Spring Break)!!  

Miss Garcia and myself hope everyone remembered to “Spring Ahead”!  Between the time change and spring sports in full swing, we are thankful to have Spring Break coming up next week!!  Hopefully the weather will stay spring like for vacation!!

Math

Our week in math will continue to be all about word problems.  We worked on word problems related to money and measurement.  Students have been working extremely hard on reading, understanding, and solving word problems.  Our work wth money and measurement word problems will finish on Thursday with an assessment.

Language

Our time in language was spent with producing, expanding, and rearranging complete simple and compound sentences.  Students did a fantastic job taking a very simple sentence and making it more complex by adding adjectives, adverbs, a "where", or a "when".

My dog ate.

Last night, my little dog quickly ate all the dog food in the pen before my bigger dogs could eat.

Students also practiced combining 2 simple sentences using a conjunction (and, or, so, or but).

We like to go to the movies.

We like to eat popcorn.

Those 2 simple sentences can be combined to using a conjunction.

We like to go to the movies and eat popcorn.

Writing and Projects

Our work in writing has gone “hand and hand” with our project work.  Students have been finishing up their captions for their Project Tri-fold and writing their index card notes for their presentations on Thursday.

Because St. Patrick’s Day is Friday we are also sneaking in a wee bit of Leprechaun writing!!

Remember!!!

Second Graders will be presenting their Decade Projects on Thursday, March 16th from 2:00 p.m. to 2:45 p.m. in the cafeteria!!   They have been working so hard, we hope you can come and enjoy their hard work!!

Spring Break is next week!!  Miss Garcia and I hope that everyone enjoys a restful and safe break!  We look forward to seeing all our 2nd graders on Monday, March 27th!!

March, In Like a Lamb Out Like a Lion...NOT!!

Dear Bighorn Parents,

This week marks the end of the 3rd quarter of school!!  With the end of the quarter comes third quarter Parent/Teacher Conferences, the primary day for conferences is Friday, March 31st.  You will be receiving a Sign-Up Genius notification before spring break.  Miss Garcia and myself are looking forward to meeting with all our 2nd grade families!!

Math

Math has been all about telling time.  Students have been working with analog and digital times.  We have been practicing showing times to the nearest minutes and saying the times a variety of ways.  

This time can be read the following ways… ...55 minutes past 1 ...55 minutes after 1 ...one fifty-five ...5 minutes before two ...5 minutes until two

This week students will continue working with time on Monday and assess on Tuesday.

We will finish the week in math working on word problems.  Out of the 26 standards for math there are 3 standards that involve word problems.  Those standards involve word problems that have 2 steps and/or that deal with numbers within 100, use money, and measurement.  Since all the prerequisite standards have been taught and our work has been extensive on word problems throughout the 2nd and 3rd quarters, students will continue to work on word problems this week and beyond.

Language

Our time in Language was spent finishing up our work with apostrophes within contractions and possessive nouns.  

This week students will work on expanding and rearranging sentences to make them stronger.

Writing/Projects

We have been so thankful for our 5th grade friends who have been helping us with our Timeline Projects.  This has been a gigantic undertaking but students are learning and making connections.  As students are finishing the research phase and moving onto the creation of the end product section students, we will be very busy putting together our tri-fold boards and practicing presenting the information about our decade.  

           

Special Event

Speaking of projects....Second Graders will be presenting their Time Line Projects on Thursday, March 16th from 2:00 p.m. to 2:45 p.m.  We hope you can join us for a stroll through the twentieth century one decade at a time.

Basketball has barely ended and softball, baseball, and lacrosse practices have begun.  Next weekend (Sunday, March 12th) it will be time to spring forward by setting our clocks ahead by 1 hour.  Busy, busy times, remember not to get caught up in the rush!
