                                                                                                                         April 9, 2018

Dear Second Grade Families,

Welcome spring!!  Here we are back from Spring Break, hopefully everyone had an enjoyable
week!

A big thank-you for all the parents, family members, friends that were able to come to the
2nd grade project on Wednesday, March 28th.  The students enjoyed sharing their 3-D Maps
and slide shows.

Project Help
Our new project (listed below) has to do with time lines.  In class we will be working on
making a time line of the school year.  Miss Garcia and myself will be creating time lines of
our lives. By Wednesday students will be creating time lines of their lives.  Miss Garcia and
myself are asking for you to help your child pick 4-5 life events that you can put a date to
(month and year is fine).  Some possible events might be…
First tooth                         Birth of siblings
First word                         Date of getting a new pet
First step                          Date of other special events (sports, activities, awards, adoption, etc.)
First day of school            First haircut

Math

This week, students will be exploring fractions.  We will be looking at wholes versus fractions,
as well as halves, thirds, fourths, sixths, and eighths.  Some of the key vocabulary students
will be using will include numerator, denominator, whole, half, thirds, fourths, sixths, and
eighths.

Language
In language students will finish up their work on apostrophes in both contractions and
possessive nouns.  We will assess on apostrophes this week.

Writing
Second grade writers will finish writing their opinion piece on the better place to
vacation--the big city or the wilderness.  Students have come up with great reasons
for both vacation spots. It will be interesting to read about which place students
select and their reasons.

Projects
Our next project will have students creating a time line using the decades from 1890
through 2010.  This will entail students researching a decade and creating a tri-fold
board with a partner.

Looking forward to seeing all the second graders back ready to learn!!

Sincerely,
Anne Bloomfield
    and

Shannon Garcia
